What exactly is “Shockwave Therapy”?

Have you seen the words “Shockwave Therapy” a number of times posted on our facebook posts and videos? Have you wondered why we are talking about it so often? Well, the thing is shockwave therapy is the latest device that has proven to be one of the more effective treatment to manage chronic musculoskeletal pain i.e. heel pain. Shockwave therapy has been around for a long time and only really got noticed through an incidental finding when patient who had kidney or gall bladder stones were receiving treatment through shockwave therapy. They found not only did shockwave therapy eliminated these stones but also improved their musculoskeletal pain.

How does shockwave therapy work?

A shockwave machine contains a high-energy acoustic waves. They are transmitted through the surface of the skin and spread spherically into the body. The body responds with an increased metabolic activity around the sites of the pain. This stimulates and accelerates the healing process while helps de-sensitise the nerve receptors that are responsible for the pain response.

What conditions can shockwave therapy treat?

  • Plantar fasciitis/fasciosis
  • Retrocalcaneal bursitis
  • Achilles Tendinopathy
  • Gastrosoleus Muscle Complex (Calf Muscle Belly)

How often do I need to receive treatment?

It is recommended that you receive 5 treatment at a weekly interval to receive the best outcome. With each appointment, we will adjust the dosage and intensity of the shockwave therapy to achieve the best response. During this time, we do ask patients to reduce their activity as the treatment may cause further discomfort in the affected area. It is crucial that during the course of treatment, the patient is consistent with receiving a weekly treatment to ensure a healthy level of inflammation is maintained.

If you have a chronic foot pain especially heel pain, it is very much worth considering shockwave therapy if limited success has been seen with other treatments. So far, our patient feedback has been great, but it is not a quick fix. Like most treatments, it takes time to see the benefits. However, as the saying goes “Slowly but surely”, is a great motto to think when you receive shockwave therapy.
