Have You Had Your Falls Risk Assessment?

Have You Had Your Falls Risk Assessment?

Are you unsteady on your feet and feel off balance? Have you ever had a fall as a result of feeling uncoordinated and just unstable when standing or walking? This is the perfect assessment for you!

Falls are all too common in the ageing population and the risk is increased with those with Diabetes. They are one of the leading contributing factors of injury and death in adults over the age of 65 years. A person who falls may subsequently experience pain, hospitalisation, surgical intervention, admission to a nursing home, decreased overall functional ability, poorer quality of life, anxiety and a fear of falling. As patients age, they may experience stiffened joints, decreased muscle strength, and impaired neurological feedback. These changes, in combination with other risk factors, increase the likelihood of falls. The strongest risk factors for falls are previous falls, weakness, gait and balance impairments, and use of psychoactive medications.

The most important first step that patients who are at risk of a fall can take to prevent falls is to receive an assessment and understand their risk of fall. Once your podiatrist has assessed your level of risk, they can specifically tailor a treatment plan to keep you from falls risk.

The assessment will go for 30 minutes which includes:
– Thorough discussion of your falls history
– 4 different tests to determine your risk level
– Outlining the most appropriate management plan for you

The primary goal of this assessment is to promote a physically active lifestyle and avoid the risk of a fall. It is part of our mission as podiatrists to ensure our community is fit, strong with the best quality of life!
